Good news for Dire circumstaances

A new citizen science initiative has just been launched by Western Sydney University. it is the “dead tree detective” program which aims to discover areas in Australia where native trees have suffered from such a prolonged period of drought that they have now actually died. The Millennium Drought, from 2001 to 2009 is said to have caused significant stress to trees.

CCS has joined this program to add the sad reality that many of our Maroondah trees are now well and truly beyond redemption. You only have to walk through Wombolano park, or drive over the crest of Eastfiled Rd to see dead trees. Tree death is most noticeable along the ridgelines, which is where up until now, we have had the best coverage.
