Transition Town Maroondah, supported by Maroondah City Council are holding a movie night as part of the Sustainable Living Festival’s Transitions Film Festival program – where the showing of the documentary HOME will be a synchronised event across the state. The movie will be followed by an audience discussion.

Government withdrawing funds to Enviroment Victoria

Environment Victoria, is , in its fortieth year of action. Because it is (like CCS) an ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP it is keen to hold whichever Government of the time accountable for its actions and policies. Environment Victoria has recently been critical of issues regarding logging, mining and irrigation. Without full explanation as to reasons, the current Government has with drawn $1 million funds from Env. Vict. causing a huge shortfall on its budget to continue it’s conservation work.

CCS has answered the call for funds to keep this group afloat by making a one off donation of $100 from our own meager resources to Environment Victoria to assist them in their conservation work. Env Vict is asking for ‘”Green Action Partners” to donate $9 a month to assist them. They are currently taking action to prevent a new coal fired power station for Victoria, to replace Hazelwood. www.envic.org.au for more details.

Container deposit legislation CDL

With Clean Up Australia on the horizon, it would be good to get some feedback on how much of the litter collected is plastic bottles and cans. CCS has been actively lobbying on behalf of our members and community to bring about Government change to adopt the CD Legislation. Littering of these items is dramatically reduced in states like South Australia, and more recently Northern Territory where CDL has been introduced.

In the AGE a week ago, Ian Keirnan founder of clean up Aust, was calling on the Baillieu Government to introduce CDL. Ryan Smith, the minister for the Environment has publicly backed the scheme. Bizarrely large beverage companies like Coca Cola, oppose the scheme, via a document called the Regulatory Impact Statement.

CCS has on your behalf made a $100 donation to Boomerang Alliance, which is Nationally pushing for acceptance of CDL. Should you wish to make a private donation to this worthy cause, there is still 6 months of “fighting” to fund before a final decision is made.

Lets see an end to wasteful rubbishing of our environment by littering with material that actually has monetary value as a recycled commodity.

Great news so far. Good reason took precedence, and Council refused the application in the face of great public opposition. CCS was one of the “in principle” objectors.

We now wait and see if McDonalds takes their issue to VCAT !!

Commitee Meeting

Committee meetings are monthly, on the 2nd Thursday of every calendar month.

We meet at 8pm at No 2. Mount View St (near the corner of Main Street) in Croydon, a two story cream brick residence, set back from the corner beside the bank, and opposite the Church in Mt View St.
