Water from Dandenong creek for Ringwood Golf course

A notice appeared in the Journal of July 15th indicating that Southern Rural Water has received an application from Maroondah Council to take up a water licence, rescinded by another party.
Maroondah Council – through it’s Sports and Leisure dept, already has a licence to draw 15 megalitres from the creek, for use on the Ringwood Golf Course.
With the proposed increase, a further 11 megalitres. Maroondah’s Mayor, in the local media, said it would allow the golf course to begin summer with a full dam- holding basin on site.
CCS has expressed interest in being informed about details of this consideration on the following grounds.
Any water used on a golf course, and then running off, will have a higher chemical load, than from most surfaces, thus creating water quality issues further down stream.
The creek needs to have peak flow times to flush it through, for the health of the waterway.
Water from Dandenong creek flows into Port Phillip Bay, and should be abundant and clean.
CCS was instrumental in getting a wetland in Croydon, to help improve water quality, as Tarralla creek merges with Bungalook creek, and then on to Dandenong creek.
It probably does not set a great example for our local Council to be recommending water conservation and xeriscape planting on the one hand, and then be taking up an INCREASE in water allocation on the other hand.
We are interested in you comments – re this proposal.
