Ban the Bag (plastic)

CCS has just sent this email to Daniel Andrews, Lily D’Ambrosio  and Matthew Guy.  See below

Hello Daniel, for the past 30+ years we have been advocating for no plastic bags with the full support of our local Conservation group. Through our community runs a tributary to Dandenong creek. It used to be called Croydon Main Drain. 20 years ago we were successful in establishing a filtration wetland and enhancing Tarralla Creek environs to become a pathway for recreation. Sadly after 20 years of floating litter chocking the wetland it is now well past the point of no return.

Maroondah Council is once again looking to do another upgrade of this area into a water holding facility to assist in watering nearby playing fields. It will be a complete waste of effort, money and time if we don’t get the litter under control. Water from here joins Dandenong Creek while still in Maroondah and there is a local commitment to the Living Links project, launched recently. Again there is little point in spending $1 million  and re-introducing tiny threatened fish to Dandenong Creek, if it continues to carry floating bags, bottles and cans.

We urge you and the Environment Minister to step up and catch up with other States who have committed to better environmental outcomes regarding plastic in waterways and out to the ocean.
